The Iziko South African National Gallery is the national art gallery of South Africa and it is located in Government avenue Cape Town. It became part of the Iziko collection of museums – as managed by the Department of Arts and Culture – in 2001.

It is rated as South Africa’s premier art museum and it houses outstanding collections of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art. Selections from the Permanent Collection regularly change to enable the museum to have a full programme of temporary exhibitions of paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles and architecture.

Time for change

Seldom does change take place in these state-protected buildings, but the growing demand for art displays dictated that more exhibition space was required, and it was decided to remove the drywalling from the existing coffee shop to accommodate this.

The removal of the walls incurred some damage to the beautiful parquet flooring and an expert flooring company, able to handle the intricate repair was required to do the job. Libra Flooring, a Montague gardens-based flooring company who are accredited Government suppliers on the Central supplier Database CSD, were given the distinction of renovating the floors and were very proud to be part of such a prestigious project

The parquet block flooring that was used was in teak as were many of the floors in those types of substantial historical buildings. The method of fixing was done in the traditional way of sanding and sealing and setting it with bitumen.

Very happy clients

Curator Angela Zehnder was absolutely thrilled with the outcome and the magnificent finish of the repaired flooring. It had enhanced the look of the new area without changing the ambience of the gallery as a whole as these before and after pictures clearly display…
