This may seem like an odd title, but when asked which of the two great flooring options of Laminate and Vinyl (and we often are), it’s much like choosing between a gold and silver medallist at the Olympics. One may have beaten the other by .01 of a second and, on a different day, would have lost to them – so it’s really about personal preference because these are both great products. The fact is when it comes down to Laminate Vs. Vinyl flooring, you’re choosing between the best and the best!
We feel that the best way for you to choose would be to look at the benefits and differences between each – then you decide…
The benefits of Laminate flooring
Aesthetics – Laminate floors get their very realistic wood look because they are mostly made from wood by-products called “composite wood”. Layers of this are laminated together and finished with a photographic print resembling real wood or stone, sealed under a durable resin layer.
Vinyl tiles are made from PVC with a surface finish of urethane, which is a kind of plastic but has exactly the look and feel of stone and wood flooring. Both Laminate and Vinyl come in a range of colours and styles, so you have options for your personal décor requirements, and neither floor type can be said to be more aesthetically authentic, although Laminate possibly just has the edge, but is a slightly more expensive option too.
Water or moisture damage
This is an important area when it comes to wood because wood does not like a lot of moisture and is prone to water damage. Vinyl has the edge in this comparison, especially the higher-end versions. Very well-installed laminate, however, can be made to be more waterproof but generally is best installed in low-moisture areas without too much humidity.
Wear and tear
When it comes to scratching and the wear and tear like that of pets and children, both options are scratch-proof and hard-wearing, but Laminate is a better option if kids are older and pets are house-trained as the spoilage of a lot of liquid (or doggy mess) is not ideal. Vinyl will handle this well but can be dented by heavy objects. Laminate is a fantastic option when it comes to high-traffic (but dry) areas.
